Hello! I’m Lidia Hernández-Tapia, and this is my website that I built all by myself.
I’m a multi-faceted writer, scholar and translator based in New York City and Cuba. I earned a Master’s degree from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY and a B.A. at the University of Havana. My professional career started in Havana, Cuba, working as a reporter for independent media organizations, during the the Obama administration's attempt to normalize relations between the United States and Cuba.
Since then, I have pursued meaningful, human stories that focus on the intersection of culture, the environment and politics. Highlights of my deep dives include reporting on Barack Obama’s Cuba visit (taz.de), a feature on the thriving Cuban electronic music scene (CubanArtNews.org), the significance of black feminism (In The Thick podcast), a Lutheran priest who adopted 27 Central American kids in an attempt to save them from deportation (The Atlantic), the cancellation of a radio show that connected Colombia’s desaparecidos with their relatives (America’s Quarterly), and a 360 video on the environmental issues affecting the Dead Sea in Israel (Al Jazeera English). I have also worked as a writer for NY1, a translator for WNYC radio and a fellow for DemocracyNow! and the In The Thick podcast.
Currently, I'm a Ph.D. student at the Latin American, Iberian and Latino Cultures department, LAILAC, at the CUNY Graduate Center, and a digital fellow at the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies.Get in touch! here
